Jodi Picoult tackles issues of race and privilege in this ebook original short story, a prequel to her upcoming novel Small Great Things. In “Shine,” the master storyteller and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Leaving Time and My Sister’s Keeper introduces readers to the unforgettable Ruth Brooks.

Today is Ruth’s first day of third grade at Dalton. The prestigious institution on New York’s Upper East Side couldn’t be more different from her old school in Harlem. Despite being the smartest girl in her grade, Ruth suspects that her classmates and teachers only see her dark skin. She also notices that Christina, the daughter of her mother’s employer, treats Ruth very differently when they’re hanging out with the popular girls rather than playing together. Ruth must navigate between two worlds, never losing sight of the dreams she has for herself—in hopes that someday, someone will see her for who she really is.

I am a huge Jodi Picoult fan, I have read everything she’s written and always pre-order when a new book is coming out. With her last few books, she has put out a mini-novella as a precursor to the full novel. I love that she does this. It gets you into the characters and wets your whistle for the story.

This book tells about Ruth, a young black girl, who is given a scholarship to a prestigious elementary school where her mom’s employer’s daughter is already a student. Ruth and Christina (the employer’s daughter) are close friends before becoming classmates but prejudices from other student’s impair their in-school friendship.

I liked this short story, I would recommend it to any Picoult fan.

Shine Short Story Single A Short Story edition by Jodi Picoult Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This brief story gives some insight as to how some children and some adults perceive race. It takes us on a short trip into the feelings of an African American child in an all white upper class school.
I am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult and do can only guess that seeing her use the novella format isn't as enjoyable to me.
Ruth is a black girl from the Bronks. A very smart child who is awarded with a tuition to the Dalton school in NYC.
This is where I began to feel that Picoult's book writing skills were matched with her novella writing skills.
(*possible spoiler*) I liked this book, i liked Ruth, but i can't quite figure out the message intended in the ending. Part of me thinks her mother was trying to tell Ruth she is just as good/worthy as the other girls in her class. But another part of me says they gave in, and tried to blend in or fit in, rather than stand out for who she is.
This is a prequel to Ms. Picoult's, "Small Great Things". I did not realize there was a prequel until I finished SGT. I wish I would have read "Shine" first, it is a perfect 40 page introduction to the dynamic novel that is SGT and the unforgettable Ruth Brooks. However, I wish there was more to this book and Ruth's story during her childhood.
Jodi Picoult does an excellent job of getting into the mind of the black child Ruth.
She describes situations that put Ruth in an uncomfortable position and only
magnified her sense of "difference".
She also put her friend in a position of having to choose between her loyalty Ruth
And her need to fit in to her established group. By walking us through these
typical scenes it helps us see how racial prejudice begins in the minds of the
Child who is ill equipped to deal with these pressures. She also shows how
well meaning adults often don't know how to handle such situations in a
helpful way.
I applaud Picoults talent for taking a current social issue and weaving it into
a brilliant story that not only instructs us but helps us have a more compassionate
attitude toward our fellow humans.
S. Leap - a big fan
A very short prequel to Small Great Things that is a good introduction to the characters in that book, in particular Ruth Brooks, an eight year old African American who receives a scholarship to attend a prestigious all-white school. Already a powerful story dealing with important issues. I'm looking forward to continuing with her story in Small Great Things.
Light on pages, but packed with emotion and a little girl’s heart-wrenching reality, this short story sets the stage for the stellar novel Small Great Things.

Smart and curious, Ruth is an eight-year-old girl that doesn’t really fit in. No matter how hard she tries, she’s different. A scholarship kid from Harlem, she’s the only black girl in a sea of white faces at a prestigious school, and it’s tough. The behavior of her new classmates, the teacher, her supposed “friend” and even her own family makes her question everything she held true. It’s a harsh reality, that no matter how hard she tries to shine, she might not ever been seen as an equal. I had to admire her perseverance and the way she held her head high, despite the way some people treated her.

I may be incredibly naive, but the entire time I was reading, I just kept asking myself - are kids really this mean? Granted it’s been quite some time since I was in third grade and I don’t have any kids, but still. Are kids this young really spewing such hatred? There’s no way they understand the ramifications of their hurtful comments or even fully grasp what they’re saying, so how exactly are they learning to behave this way? It's scary to think about.

Having already read the majority of Small Great Things, as I write this review, I can say this novella is only a tiny taste of the issue at hand - racism. It’s a good way to prepare yourself for the full novel though, which is an extremely heavy read. Racism is a difficult topic period, but I think Jodi Picoult manages to deliver a thought-provoking and eye-opening story. And more importantly, she does so in a way that forces you to examine all sides of the issue.
