It started off really bad with zero characterization and then a huge but vague exposition dump. It started to get a little better over time, but the overall writing style is childish and needs a lot of work. Dialogue swaps from fantasy to modern. I have absolutely no idea what level of technology these people have, and very little is actually described. Each new plot point is, at best, tossed into the story line. I wish I could say this added a level of interest. The worst thing is that the author actually had some really great ideas! Enough that I gave this 2 instead of 1 star. They were just incredibly poorly executed. To give an example (non spoiler) the two main plot problems were suddenly solved in maybe a paragraph each. There was even a "fight scene" (if it can be called that) with a big bad and it wasn't even in the main characters point of view!It's books like this that make me want to become an editor sometimes. Coming up with a good storyline is hard, but delivery is what makes a book worth reading. This one is not worth reading. This is a very early draft that needs to be flushed out, acquire some consistency, and create some actual emotion.

Read it in one sitting! That means, at least for me, great world building, good character development, even side ones, fast paced story and witty dialogues as usual in all Mays books I've read so far. Has some unique ideas in paranormal settings which is great accomplishment considering number of authors in this genre. If not for occasional juvenile behaviour and retorts of main character (not much, mind you) and a lot of typos (again!!!) could have been 4.5. Looking forward for next installment 😊. And please, please do something about typos (her, him, she, he). It's really annoying and will stop reading your books if this doesn't improve.
Great book. Xandrie is awesome. She was born into a mage family but has no magic or does she. She might be a discrace to her family, but that doesn't get her down, she is a strong character and yet humble. Rhey is the dragon king and changes are coming for his kingdom. The claiming to choose the queen has been initiated but Rhey only wants Xandrie. Can they make it work when secrets from the past might be coming to tear the kingdom apart? I can not wait for more of this series, Talia seems like a fascinating character, Aleria seems to have hidden talents behind her beauty and maybe their brother will even appear. And that is not to say that the dragon characters aren't just as fascinating.

This book had tons of promise BUT....
I tried really hard to be in to this book and I finished it out of principle but I would not buy the others. You never really feel connected to the characters. There is no real “hardship” to overcome. The antagonist is almost non existent and if so, there is no real struggle. She fights, she wins and it’s all very effortless. There is no real romance other than I see you, I want you, you’re mine. Seriously. No heat, no burn to even speak of. The storyline looked promising but I hate that I wasted my money. It needs far more depth. Waaaaaaaaay More depth to everything.
'Read a chapter before you go to sleep' I said, 'You will be able to sleep' I said... 2.30 am and I finished the damn book in one go.... yeah... ah well, who needs sleep anyway right?
As a magic-less daughter in a prominent family of mages Xandrie is seen as little more as their maid. She refuses to let this define who she is however and trains with the sword instead, in secret, in the forest, with her trusted companion Claws. That all changes when the dragon shifter Elza saves her from certain death and with whom she develops a deep and trusting friendship. Through a series of events she ends up being saved yet again by a dragon, this time by Rhey... their king. An instant connection flares to life and now Xandrie finds herself facing off against other female dragons for the title of Queen and the handsome King himself.
I liked this book a lot, it is well written and a light and smooth read.
For those not afraid to start a new series because of open endings etc. this book can be read as a standalone. The ending of course opens up the setting for the next in the series, but there is no cliff-hanger and Xandrie's story seems to be concluded (for now).
I will definitely read the rest of the series!
The cover is what drew me in but the story hooked me soon enough.
Given the warnings in the blurb I really expected more swearing. Lol. Because of the language I had a bit of a hard time distinguishing what the setting and period was meant to be, however that was a very minor issue and I eventually just got used to it. I seemed to also have a few issues with continuity-- bits where something distressing would happen and then basically forgotten about in the next chapter.
I thought this was a fairly unique tale with some hints of classic fairytale. There is a lot of secondary characters that I am interested in reading more about so I'm sure I will continue the series soon.
The story was rushed, not well fleshed out. There were opportunities for the author to create sub plots and intertwine them, but did not. The book was sorely lacking the details between big actions and events, giving the feeling of a summary and not a novel.
