Alison Read, orphaned when she was two years old, had for some years lived and worked with Paul Aylmer, her appointed guardian. Paul, an experienced antique dealer whose business thrived in the south-coast town of Sealock, had come to rely on Alison, who had quickly learned the trade.
But when he asked her to value the contents of Beacon Ride, a chain of events was set off that led to the exposure of a secret he had managed to conceal. Now Alison’s relationship with Paul for many years came under threat, and she realised that only by confronting the situation head-on would she restore the happiness she once had and achieve the ambitions she sought.
This is one of Catherine Cookson’s more unusual novels part-mystery, part-love story, with fascinating glimpses of the world of antiques in the 1960s.
The Lady on my Left eBook Catherine Cookson
Overall, I found this to be a good read, but there are a few elements that may make it not palatable to some readers. Although the relationship between the hero Paul and heroine Alison was often sweet and tender, there was a flawed power and age dynamic between them. Alison was about 20 years younger than Paul, and she was also his ward. I was uncomfortable when it was discovered how Paul "invested" Alison's trust fund. Also, when Paul's "secret" (a secret that had no reasonable need to be kept secret in my opinion) was discovered by Alison, his actions towards Alison in the immediate aftermath would be considered abusive by today's standards. The author gives an interesting look inside the English 1960s antique market. Despite the flawed hero, I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot, and found the ending satisfying.

The Lady on my Left eBook Catherine Cookson Reviews
Another enjoyable read from Catherine Cookson. I enjoy reading about the north of England which the author does so well. Not as dark as some of her novels, more a lighthearted read.
I order these books for my mother and she loves them
I love even her less stellar efforts like this one!
Cookson never fails---even in this little book. It's a fast read, typical Cookson, great characters despite being written for a contemporary setting. It's different from her others because of that and the fact that it takes place in the world of antiques and auctions. Like all her books, I will sorry when I come to the end.
This book, like all of Catherine Cookson’s novels is intriguing and the characters, along with the plot, make it almost impossible to stop reading. Spellbinding right up to the happy ending.
what a great story
Even though I have little to no interest in antiques and auctions, the story actually makes them interesting. The characters are brought to life with the author's skill.
