Ex-business owner and soon to be ex-husband Jake has had some rotten luck of late. His world is tumbling down around him, but it’s time to dust himself off and move on. Buying and fixing up the most dilapidated home he can find might be just the thing to get him back on track.
But Jake gets more than he bargained for when he meets former lawyer turned landscaper Dakota. Dakota is smart and ridiculously sexy—and Jake doesn't have a clue how to act around him. After several gardening mishaps, Jake is sure Dakota thinks he’s completely inept.
Turns out Dakota is thinking something else entirely. And as Dakota gives Jake advice, an ear to listen, and helps him work through his issues, Jake realizes flowers aren’t the only thing blooming between them.

Jake’s pretty sure he could impress Dakota with his intelligence and skills, if only he could quit injuring him at every turn. The house Jake buys is in need of more than just a little TLC. The way the author describes it, sounds like it would have been less trouble to raze it and start over. But that isn’t what Jake saw when he walked through the front door. He saw himself. The house needed the attention and talents of someone who knew what they were doing. It needed someone who would look beyond the issues and see the potential. It needed Jake and Jake needed Dakota.
This is a really sweet story. Jake and Dakota are likable characters and it was fun to watch their attraction grow at a steady simmer rather than boiling over at first glance. Dakota is very subtle, almost too subtle but that’s his character, in his way of showing Jake he’s interested. With the bits and pieces the author sprinkled in about who he was, it really made more sense than if he was suddenly all over Jake. They compliment one another.
The story covers a good space of time. I mean, this relationship doesn’t start and culminate within a week or even a month. As Dakota puts it, he wanted to do it right. He really kind of woos Jake slowly and sweetly and it isn’t until later that Jake recognizes it.
There could have been a word count restraint on this story but there were times that the telling outweighed the opportunity for showing. It doesn’t kill the story by any means but, I think it would have enhanced the flow and the reader involvement in the story to have been in the scene rather than reading over the scene. Some of the best moments are when they’re simply talking.
The heat is there, too. The sweet way that Dakota has of touching Jake on his back or his leg, it fits the moments. Neither character is determined to be the alpha male and yet it made sense that Jake would defer to him.
The secondary characters add to this story and round it out nicely. I would actually like to see if Matt and Jasper, together or separately, find their own match.
This short is a HFN but it has real potential for a HEA. Ms.Harding has a nice voice in writing and she’s someone I’d read again. Readers looking for a quick feel good romance should give Fixer Upper a read.

M/M Romance, short story
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
This was a super quick read. It wasn't exactly insta-love, but it was close. And, while I maintain that they aren't my favorite books, this one was sweet, hot and likable.
Jake is down on his luck. I wish that we were able to have more of a resolution between him and his ex, but I can understand that the story was about him and Dakota.
I loved the clumsiness of Jake and the character of Dakota a lot in this story. Dakota is more the silent type and was patient and funny in his own way.
The two of them together was hot, sweet, gentle and just what the book needed. Even though this was a short story, Harding had a lot of great components.
This was so cute! I loved the humor and the sweetness, and I totally identified with Jake and his unfortunate tendency to drop things/break things/etc. (KLUTZY PEOPLE UNITE) I am also a disaster (and at 38, have never mowed a lawn in my life | ) but I loved how Jake was so insistent that he help out. He was a great character, believable and tenacious, and vulnerable I loved that there was a reference to the Penguins of Madagascar!
I also loved that these characters were believably in their 30's -- still youthful and yet mature enough to own homes and successful companies, and to be coming out of a relationship. They were sweetly awkward around each other and then finally came together, and instead of rushing into things they took it slowly because of their past experiences (mostly Jake's). I found it romantic and totally relatable.
Harding's writing is fresh and engaging and this story kept me reading until I was finished. A sweet story about the occasional bumps and bruises that eventually lead to happy second chances. Thoroughly enjoyable story and definitely recommended!
This was a super sweet, starting over after divorce story. I kind of have a love hate relationship with novellas. I love them because it’s almost like instant gratification. I can read them super-fast and get all the goodness super quick. I dislike them sometimes because they end too quick which leaves me wanting more. That’s what happened here. I really enjoyed this author’s writing. She gave us enough character development and plot to really keep me engaged throughout. Then it ended…with a pretty sweet HFN, but I won’t lie…I wanted more….
Jake is starting over after divorcing his husband of 15 years. He decides to buy a rundown house and put all his energy towards renovating it. He’s not prepared for the visceral attraction he feels towards his new landscaper, Dakota.
Its obvious Dakota is also attracted to Jake but as they get to know each other he feels Jake may not be in a place emotionally to start something new.
The more they’re around each other, however they find they can’t deny their attraction and embark on dating. This was a slow burn but when it got going it was incredibly hot. These two burned up the pages when they got together. This was a super sweet and believable romance. I loved how this author built it up. Incredibly romantic.
Overall, truly enjoyed this novella. I would have loved more but I was satisfied with what I read. Definitely recommend.
